$4,500
This original work has been juried into the Butler Institute of American Art’s prestigious 89th National Midyear Exhibition and will be on view from July 12 to August 30, 2026.
“Murmur” is a painting in Kayla’s hyperrealism underwater portrait- if you listen closely enough, maybe you’ll hear it.
Kayla’s underwater portrait series began as an exploration of emotion translated through the physical act of holding one’s breath. In Murmur, she leans further into that fascination: the distortion of reflections, how silence itself can ring loudly in your ears.
Measuring 36 × 48 inches, this original oil painting is a one-of-a-kind piece. Signed by the artist and accompanied by a palette stamp certificate of authenticity.
In addition to the original, only 10 limited edition signed prints will ever be created. Once sold, no further reproductions of that format will be made.

“Submerge”
Original Hyperrealism Oil Painting
48 x 60 inches | Oil on Canvas
This piece was previously reserved on a payment plan. Due to a change in the collector’s circumstances, it has been released and is newly available again.
Kayla’s first underwater portrait, “Hold”, was an emotional attempt to replicate a reality of equal intensity to a specific feeling: the feeling of holding one’s breath while crying. She wanted to capture the sensation of feeling underwater- the ringing in your ears, the lack of oxygen that almost dances along the threshold of pleasure. A feeling of complete pause, and complete inner silence. A moment of truly allowing yourself to feel the emotion of sadness- to float in it, shutting out the outside world completely. Kayla quickly fell in love with the challenge of combining her love for portraiture with painting the ripples, bubbles, and reflections of being underwater, ultimately leading her to her underwater portrait series.
This 48 x 60 inch hyperrealistic oil painting is the first in Kayla Carlile’s newest body of work: a deeper, more refined pursuit of realism and scale. It includes a signed palette stamp certificate of authenticity.

AVAILABLE WORKS
“Untitled” – Original Oil Painting
48 × 48 inches | Oil on canvas
This painting is the largest underwater portrait I’ve done, measuring at 48 x 48 inches. It is also the first underwater painting where I’ve used my own face and body as a reference image, making it a self-portrait of sorts. Can you see the resemblance?
My underwater pieces are all quite spiritual for me. It feels like painting the perplexing in-between of life and death, which I ponder often. What will it feel like when I leave behind one realm to enter another? How can the spiritual dimension feel so close and yet so far? Sometimes it feels like a rippling image I can barely see above the surface of the water. Do fish dream of what lives above the surface in the same way?
I haven’t named her yet. If you have any ideas, I’d love to hear them.

36 × 48 inches | Oil on canvas
“Veil” is an exploration of both my underwater realism and the playful blending of two realities: the physical and spiritual realms. When I paint, I often feel as though I am connected to something beyond myself, perhaps a connection to human consciousness as a whole. I spend many hours contemplating what exists beyond this life, and this painting embodies those curiosities. What happens when we die? Do we become one with the stars? Is human really even made of anything other than the sea and earth and stars themselves? What does it feel like when our soul transcends beyond this life? What will being in the presence our Creator feel like? Will we feel enveloped in warmth, in light? Will it feel like bathing in the stars? This painting is a sort of self-portrait of searching. It is best explained by one of my favorite artist quotes:
“The position of the artist is humble. He is essentially a channel," -Piet Mondrian
